Since January 01, 2017, the regulations of the GoBD (principles for compliant keeping and storage of books, records and documents in electronic form as well as for data access) have applied without restriction. The legislator now requires audit-proof, automatic and legally compliant archiving of all emails associated with a business process.

E-mails to be classified as commercial letters must be stored for 6 years - e-mails relevant under tax law for 10 years.
